Department of Railroad Infrastructure System Engineering

Railroads are one of the most important transportation facilities in securing national competitiveness. In particular, railroads are the most efficient means of transportation capable of transporting large quantities and solve the environmental and climate problems. Currently, all over the world is investing in the railroad construction including high-speed railroad. Railroad industry is considered as one of the most promising technology.

Since South Korea became the fifth country in the world to have a high-speed railroad, Gyeongbu High-Speed Line, the high-speed railroad network has been expanded with the Honam High-Speed Line, Gyeongjeon Line, Jeolla Line, Donghae Line, and Gangneung Line. Each local government is promoting construction projects such as urban railroad and light railroad. The demand for educated engineers is expected to grow further.

The Department of Railway Infrastructure Engineering deals with cutting-edge technologies that enable more scientific and systematic planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities that are the basis of railway transportation facilities such as tracks, roadbeds, bridges, and tunnels. Our department specializes in civil engineering and environmental engineering. We are preparing a program that students can learn various disciplines for future railroads.

The foundation of Korean railroads heading to the world begins with educating human resources understanding a railroad. With over 110 years of department history and alumni who are currently leading the Korean railroad industry, our department will educate engineers who will lead the world railroad industry in the future.

Introduction

Our department provides railroad infrastructure engineering, such as railroad environment, railroad track and structure, railroad planning, railroad foundation, railroad construction, and project management. Students can expand understanding of social overhead capital (SOC), including railroad, pavement, tunnel, bridge, and water & sewage systems.

The engineering classes from our department in Korea National University of Transportation do not impart knowledge to students one-way, but rather do communicate with students to solve problems in creative ways through discussions. It also provides an environment where students can organize and present their thoughts and freely exchange ideas among other students.

In the Department of Railroad Infrastructure Engineering, you can learn the engineering theories and techniques that is necessary for planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the latest 21st century railroad systems that require advanced technologies such as high-speed, cutting-edge, and internationalization. Students will grow into advanced railroad engineer with the comprehensive knowledge and creative thinking.
