Dapartment of Korean Language and Literature

Thank you for visiting the Department of Korean Language and Literature.

The Department of Korean Language and Literature specializes in the study of Korean language and literature. In the area of Korean language, we teach various approaches to Korean language and methodologies for teaching and learning Korean to foreigners. In the area of Korean literature, we teach modern poetry, modern novels, modern plays and dramas, film, and Korean classical literature.

The Korean Literature program is very open to internationalization in terms of Korean as a foreign language and Korean literature as a foreign literature. Students from Russia, China, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and other countries participate in exchange programs with the Department of Korean Literature every year, and we have a large number of foreign students in our graduate programs.

We also recognize the difficulties faced by students majoring in the humanities these days in terms of realistic career choices. While evaluating academic fields solely on the basis of employment outcomes exposes a number of problems, I think it is also very important to teach students well so that they can find suitable jobs. After graduation, our Korean literature students work as broadcast composers, reporters for newspapers and internet media, office workers for general companies, public relations offices for companies, cultural industry planning and content production, and teachers of Korean to foreigners. Of course, there are also students who write or prepare to write poetry, novels, and dramas. The Korean Literature major will help you cultivate the most important academic theories and practical acumen for these cultural activities.

With our robust curriculum and passionate faculty, we will make your interest in Korean Literature a reality. We look forward to your enthusiastic response.

Thank you.

Introduction

The Department of Korean Literature consists of three majors: Classical and Modern Literature, Korean Studies, and Korean Language and Education. The field of Classical Korean Literature explores the world of Korean classical literature, which has been passed down in a long tradition; the field of Modern Korean Literature explores contemporary literature from the modern period to the present; and the field of Korean Studies and Korean Language Education studies the history and characteristic norms of the Korean language and learns how to teach Korean to foreigners. In addition, research is being conducted in various new areas such as creative writing such as screenplays and plays, analysis of various cultural contents, one-person media, and one-person publishing.

The Department of Korean Language and Literature has been engaged in various international exchanges with scholars and students from other countries beyond the framework of ‘national literature’. The Department of Korean Literature is one of the most internationally active majors at the Korea National University of Transportation. Every year, many students from various countries in Asia come to Korea as exchange students, and the graduate school also has foreign graduate students of various nationalities.
