Department of Paramedic Science

The Department of Paramedicine at KNUT has been making unremitting efforts to improve public health and develop emergency medicine since 1995, when Korea's Emergency Medical Care Act was enacted. The Department of Paramedicine at KNUT, which has been involved in the history of emergency medicine in Korea, established a four-year undergraduate education system in 2006, then a master's program in 2010 and a doctor’s program in 2020 to train field-oriented paramedics needed in the current era. Our graduates have excelled in various fields of emergency medical education, research, and practice for healthcare providers and the general public throughout the country.

Today, we are faced with an aging population and an increase in the number of accidents and disasters, and the role of paramedics is expanding. In this rapidly changing and evolving emergency medicine environment, it is time to step up to the plate by accurately identifying and responding to the needs of modern society.

Creating a safe future by exploring the truth and fostering first-class paramedics who serve humanity with our expertise is the direction that our department will take in the future. To this end, all faculty members of the department will do their best to create an optimal educational environment and provide students with academic excellence so that they can choose various careers surrounding emergency medicine in the future.

We hope that you will look forward to the future of the Department of Paramedicine at KNUT and encourage us to grow together with the world as global leaders who understand and practice the value and meaning of life. Thank you.

Introduction

The major classes in paramedicine are based on the theory and skills of emergency medical practices such as rescue, assessment, and emergency care for emergency patients in clinical and non-hospital settings. The class is relatively active compared to other disciplines because it must reflect the rapidly diversifying environmental characteristics of the current era. In addition, although professional resuscitation is basically performed under the direction of a doctor, the class also includes skills and decision-making skills for situations in which a first responder must judge and apply appropriate first aid alone in case a doctor's instructions are not available due to urgent circumstances or lack of communication.

In addition, students are encouraged to solve problems in a creative way by themselves through discussions between professors and students and between students and students, rather than unilaterally imparting knowledge to students. In particular, considering the importance of the ability to cope with field situations, medical simulation training is conducted so that students can skillfully solve difficult emergency situations, and classes are held to train paramedics who actively solve problems by applying the PBL (Problem Based Learning) teaching method. As a result, KU's paramedic students have become professional paramedics with excellent on-the-job skills and are working as outstanding paramedics in various fields such as firefighters (119 paramedics), correctional officials, health officials, regional emergency medical centers, emergency medical institutions, and emergency patient transport teams.
