Dapartment of Communication Design

Hello!

This is the Department of Communication Design at Korea National University of Transportation.

Today, design has been influenced by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and it is very important to understand the emotion and experience of users and apply them to design. This means that Communication design is not just a graphic representation, but an integrated design that encompasses IoT, which connects people and products, data obtained through user experiences, and various functions and intangible services that can be obtained and created using AI (Artificial Intelligence). Design is at the center of revolutionary technological changes with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, not only through the expansion of fields and areas, but also through the role of communication tools.

The Department of Communication Design at NTNU, therefore, has faculty members who specialize in design education based on design thinking from spatial expression through visual thinking to service design areas. Faculty members who specialize in convergence design education are doing their best to experience and practice education with students. In this sense, the Department of Communication Design aims to fulfill value change in design and innovative design education through education with students and professors.

Faculty members of the Department of Communication Design will also strive to educate and research on design that meets real-life needs, design that understands and cares for users, design that is easy to read and use, and design that understands human sensitivity. We will lead the value change of design that connects humans, machines, and information together, rather than simply playing a role in decorating and decorating the appearance.

We, the Department of Communication Design, will strive to cultivate convergent designers with application, creativity, and integrated thinking who can actively cope with and challenge rapidly changing social and environmental changes.

Thank you.

Kyung-Ah Lee, Head of Communication Design Department

Introduction

In the past century, education in the field of design was centered on the production of results with a focus on specialized majors. However, it is important for designers to understand the entire process of problem solving, not just the results in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Rather than defining design as a static perspective, in the Department of Communication Design, we expand the concept to dynamic design through multi-perspective thinking by combining the foundations and applied stages. We, furthermore, are doing our best to provide integrated design education that encompasses not only graphical representations, beautify and decorate the appearance, but also IoT connecting people and products, data obtained through user experiences, and various functions and intangible services that can be created using AI (artificial intelligence).

The Department of Communication Design provides integrated education in the basic, intermediate and advanced phases of design according to the CDECM, an educational model developed by the department at the beginning of its existence. In addition, the Department of Communication Design operates a basic stage so that students who entered the program as non-practitioners can learn design without difficulties. In the basic phase, students are taught about drawing, color, and digital photography, which are the foundations of design. They also focus on design theories and methodologies such as design research, design process, and design history for design thinking. And they learn various 2D and 3D programs. For example, the ones we know and love, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, SketchUp, Rhino, 3D Max, etc.

In the intermediate phase, students acquire knowledge and mindset in different majors without segmenting fields, and work together to solve and improve the problems facing them in terms of vision, products, space, and services. Furthermore, students develop creative problem-solving skills while experiencing different thinking and problem-solving processes. Student can experience convergence education to derive creative and new ideas, and concepts through a variety of innovative teaching methods applied by the entire faculty. Additionally, they can experience various field experiences and project-type education based on the intensive course of their major. They can learn how to explain and promote their design works through a specialized design writing class in the intensive major course.

Classes in the Department of Communication Design are based on free communication, including free discussions between professors and students, 1:1 interviews, and group critiques. The Communication Design Department's teaching method prioritizes understanding and mutual exchange of each other's ideas rather than one-sided knowledge transfer.

All students in the Department of Communication Design have unique creativity to understand and execute the entire design process with skills and expertise they have improved through the design thinking-centered CDECM curriculum. Additionally, they will become a truly multidisciplinary designer who can work across a variety of industries.

Curriculum table - No, Grade, Semester, Subject name, Credit and time, Explanation
No. Grade Semester Subject name Credit and time Explanation
36 2 1 Typography 3-2-2 Since text elements play an important role in conveying visual information throughout design, students will understand letters as a basic component of visual design, and develop the ability to apply texts in various media. In particular, they will learn a modern and functional sense of typography through practice of using letters for various information delivery functions not only in print media suitable for the digital font era, but also in the overall living environment.
35 2 1 Technical Drawing Studio 3-2-2 Communication through images has a variety of methods and advantages. Technical drawing is useful, in this concept, for explaining information about something that is hidden, such as a cross-section of an object or the structure inside a machine. This course studies about different drawing methods using visual metaphors, understanding the details of data and how graphics with humor and uniqueness can attract users’ interest providing motivation and engagement.
34 2 1 Infographics & Making Photo 3-3-2 Understand and learn the basic concept of photography and the shooting method necessary for creating photographic works. The course, in particular, explores digital image shooting techniques necessary for the generalization and design work of digital cameras through various practices centered on DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras. Additionally, the method of retouching captured digital images will be practiced mainly using the Adobe Photoshop program so that it can be used in practical processes. Moreover, the modern trend, which has shifted from the reading era to the visual era, is rapidly developing simpler and functional information. So the class will look into how the information graphic designs are developing, working, and can be applied in practical use through domestic and foreign cases.
33 2 1 Design Research 3-3-0 The paradigm of how users relate to information is shifting with the constant flood of information, users now want information and contents to be provided in their language and culture. Hence, students will explore how to structure complicated visual and spatial problems that require creative design solutions.
32 2 2 Creative Design 3-2-2 The flow of segmentation and specialization in the design field is not only destroying the fields of related disciplines, but is also quickly intensifying competition among many designers. In order to derive more original and creative design ideas and concepts, this course learn about the diversity and design capabilities (ability, adaptation) that occur in the field of visual design.
31 2 2 Space Design Management 3-2-2 The purpose of Space Design Management is to solve the fundamental problem of how to make human life convenient by using space more efficiently and effectively from the user's perspective. In this course, the course will totalize the experience of the design brand provided by space, and studies ways to maximize profits through design by building them into space identity images through theoretical research and practice on space and design management.
30 2 2 New Media Signage Design 2-2-2 The course understand and acquire the basic concepts of signage design and the processes required for practical production. In particular, students learn design related to digital printing, understanding domestic and international sign design trends, and how to apply various sign design processes used in the actual field.
29 2 2 Digital Media Design 3-3-0 This course studies the basic theory of digital design, which is an important element of user experience (UX), and learns how to express media based on the above theory. Through this, students develop the digital media design skills that can communicate various sensory experiences.
28 2 2 Digital Print Design 3-2-2 In this course, students will learn DTP (Desk Top Publishing) related programs and production processe for editing, publishing, and computer design in graphic design, and practice CTP (Computer to Plate) and DP (Digital Print). Students will also develop professional editing design ability such as image layout and print manuscript editing through various practical projects.
27 3 1 Package design I 3-2-2 This course explore through practice the role of communication according to the product distribution structure by understanding the function and purpose of package design. In this concept, students identify and structure the three-dimensional form inferred from the characteristics of the product, and visualize the brand and logo suitable for the content and purpose.
